Web Designer
We need a world-class Web Designer to take our website to the next level!
We are looking for an intelligent and passionate Web Designer. The revolution in analysis is being driven by reducing the friction between humans and computers, and we need your help to build momentum on this front. Whether we’re building the next system for interactive analysis with billion row databases, fine-tuning the usability of a common workflow, or designing completely new analytic methods -- we need your skills.
You care deeply about usability, understand the difference between power users and novices (and can simultaneously design an interface for all!), obsess over pixel perfection, read Tufte before bed, demand that animations smoothly ease in and out, and want to build software that people love to use. This job is for you.
Requirements
- An artistic flair is a must!

- Two years of experience maintaining and enhancing commercial websites

Data Engineer/Statistician
Data Engineers at SMA work with our proprietary data to analyze and solve the most difficult problems Social Media throws at us.
SMA is on the front line to prove the analytical value of Social Media analytics against nebulous problems with unprocessed data under tight time constraints. We use complex econometric and analytical models and do everything it takes to make them succeed: we gain intimate knowledge of the problems we are trying to solve, work closely with analysts to uncover new insights, and communicate with world class developers to bring innovation to market. The problem space is wildly diverse with a current emphasis on financial markets. We are domain experts; we are problem solving experts. We aren’t all engineers but we are all very comfortable with technology. We deliver high quality analytical tools to our customers.
Requirements
- An agile mind is a must!
- Masters in Business, Statistics, Finance or related field
- Substantial work experience conducting rigorous analysis, preferably in finance or technology
- Experience in capital markets, a big plus
- Extensive experience with the R statistical language, required
- Extensive experience with MySQL or similar relational database, required
- Extremely detail-oriented and hands-on
- Ability to collaborate and communicate with technical and non-technical personnel
Software Engineer
We need world-class engineers to develop our information exploration technologies. The problem space includes everything from big data to natural language processing, and everything in between.
We are looking for intelligent and passionate software engineers who love to code and aren’t intimidated by challenging problems. We are designing algorithms to solve novel search problems across heterogeneous information. Our information exploration technology allows analysts to understand complex relationships.
Requirements
- BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent (PhD or dropped out of PhD, a plus)
- Previous job experience a plus
- Java experience a big plus
- Enthusiasm for solving interesting problems and a willingness to take on new product features
- Background in distributed systems, machine learning, information retrieval, data visualization and/or developing enterprise software systems a plus
- Interest in working on a rapidly changing, ever-evolving system

Technical Writer
SMA is seeking a technical writer to create user documentation, online help/knowledge base articles, white sheets and design specifications, for our products. This is a part-time position based in Naperville, Illinois.
SMA is on the front line to prove the analytical value of Social Media analytics against nebulous problems with unprocessed data under tight time constraints. We use complex econometric and analytical models. We expect our technical writer to interact closely with research and development teams, to create accurate, complete, unambiguous and concise documentation.
Requirements
- An agile mind is a must!
- Advanced degree. (Business, Statistics, Finance or related field, a plus)
- Five or more years technical writing work experience
- Excellent written and verbal English language skills
- Knowledge of Social Media
- Experience in capital markets, a big plus
- Extremely detail-oriented and hands-on
- Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical personnel
